How did majoring in English prepare you for your career?
I could have chosen any career path that I wanted with my English degree, but my degree actually prepared me best for a secondary degree. Majoring in English gave me a better understanding of literature, which was extremely beneficial in obtaining a master’s in school library media.
How has majoring in English enriched your life?
While it is true that reading is fundamental, reading can also be fun. Majoring in English taught me to develop a love for reading while embracing the many different genres of literature that are available for enjoyment. By gaining a love for reading, I am able to encourage the students that I encounter daily to cultivate that same love.
What advice or insight do you have for VSU alumni and students interested in your career field?
A degree in English can prepare you for just about any career that you can think of, but I would encourage English majors to pursue a career in education. There are so many opportunities to follow with an English degree, including becoming a library media specialist. The professors in the English department are amazing and will help guide you to the career choice that is best suited for you.
